Both vacuum compression molding and conventional compression molding use heated platens and hydraulic system to provide pressure and heat for the molding process.
The key difference lies in the vacuum evacuation. The vacuum compression molding press uses vacuum hood and vacuum system to create low-pressure environment surrounding the mold, therefore helping mold degassing. Conventional compression molding is suitable for rubber products with relatively simple design and molds with good venting design. However, for complex cavities, thick-walled parts, multi-cavity molds and products prone to air entrainment, vacuum compression molding can be used to reduce the risk of bubbles, voids and surface defects.

Conventional mold venting relies on vent grooves or the bumping / degassing cycle to release trapped air. The simple design can be disadvantageous for deep cavities, complex parts or products prone to air entrainment.
Vacuum evacuation helps mold degassing by automatically decreasing air pressure around the mold.
In reality, vacuum evacuation and conventional mold venting are not mutually exclusive. The production of some complex rubber products combines both methods for more reliable filling and vulcanization.
